OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO CHANGE

Do you ever feel stuck in unhealthy behavior patterns? Do you sometimes struggle to make decisions to step out of your comfort zone and achieve your wellness? In this article, we'll talk about the 4 states of readiness for change and how they can help you overcome resistance to take the next step and lead a healthier life.

When it comes to making changes in your life, you might think it's all about willpower and motivation. However, there is a process behind change that can make your life much smoother or at least give you a clearer idea of what is happening to you. Some people are more open to change, while others are more resistant. Everyone is in different states of readiness to do so, so it is important to keep in mind what state you are in and work from where you are.

In general, there are four states of readiness for change:

  1. Precontemplation: In this state, you are not considering making any changes. You may not feel affected by the problems that could be solved through change, or you may simply not be interested in changing. In this state forcing a person to change when they are in this state will not lead to anything good, as they are not ready to do so.

  2. Contemplation: In this state, you are considering making a change, but you are not yet ready to commit. You may be weighing the pros and cons of the change and considering how it would affect your life. In this state, it's important to explore the benefits of change and identify the barriers that are preventing you from taking action.

  3. Readiness: In this state, you have decided to make a change and are preparing a plan to do so. You may be setting goals and looking for resources. In this state, it is important to make sure your plan is realistic and sustainable over the long term.

  4. Action: In this state, you are taking concrete steps to make changes in your life. You are following your plan and working hard to achieve your goals. Here it is important that you have a strong support system and motivation during this process to help you overcome any obstacles you may encounter along the way.

The four states of readiness for change (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation and action) refer primarily to the process of change itself. Likewise, there are other states that you may experience after you have made a successful change in your life. In the following, I will briefly describe the states of maintenance, relapse and termination:

5. Maintenance: At this stage, you will have made a successful change and are actively working to maintain that change over time. At this point, you will have developed new skills and strategies to maintain your change and avoid going back to old habits. It is important to help you set realistic plans and goals to maintain the change over the long term.

6. Relapse: Relapse is a state when you return to old habits after making a successful change. It is important to note that relapse is a natural process on the road to change, and is not necessarily a failure. The key is to identify the reasons behind the relapse and develop new strategies to overcome the challenges.

7. Termination: At this stage, you have successfully completed the change and have integrated that change into your daily life. You feel comfortable and secure in your new habit and do not need someone else as often to maintain the change. Support will be less and less frequent until you feel you can walk on your own.

Achieving behavioral change is a process that requires dedication and focus for a period of 66 to 90 consecutive days. It is a process that is rarely linear. It is more common for there to be fluctuations and it may even take longer in some stages than others. The speed of this depends on the individual and there is no rule that goes along with it. It is important to celebrate along the way and recognize the effort and dedication you have put into your change.

Only 5% of people demonstrate an ability to change on their own
