Pantries have undergone a metamorphosis throughout history. In times past, these spaces were reserved for storing culinary treasures: fine china, elegant cutlery, trays of all sizes, glassware, tea sets, etc. However, today's reality shows a radical change: cupboards have become true sanctuaries for snacks, canned goods, biscuits, bars, cereal boxes, bottles with colored liquid and a wide range of products, which can last for a long time due to the preservatives they contain.
It is undeniable that modern pantries seem more like a pre-paid mini-market, a haven within everyone's reach to satisfy sudden cravings, satisfy fleeting hunger or even as a lifesaver in case of food cravings and "emergencies". At first glance, it may seem like an ingenious, practical and inexpensive resource, but is this really the path to healthy eating?
In uncertain times like the ones we went through in 2020, the act of stocking our pantries became mission critical. Panic and uncertainty led most people to fill their cupboards with a rainbow of boxes and attractive packages that took up more than 80% of the available space.
Pantry 2020
Your pantry, far from being a deposit of temptations, can become a strategic space to nourish your mind and body. Also, by having more space available, it allows you to have on hand appliances, kitchen helpers, glass cookware, etc. to cook and preserve fresh homemade food. How to organize this space?
Use these four criteria to organize your pantry:
Take everything out and clean the space
Check each product: expiration date and ingredients.
Leave current products with less than 5 ingredients.
Say goodbye to products containing sugar or sweeteners and processed fats.
The goal is to use the space in your pantry to store utensils that you need to have on hand and truly nutritious and essential foods such as, for example:
Olive oil and coconut oil
Ghee or clarified butter
Olives and capers
Quality salt
Spices
Vinegar
Canned tuna
Tea
Coffee
Bone broth
Mustard

These products offer culinary versatility, some provide flavor and others add nutrients, making them the perfect complement to the animal protein you keep in your fridge and/or freezer. The true richness of a pantry lies in storing nutritional allies, not in quenching cravings.
I invite you to take the step to clean out your pantry and banish the temptations you may have. Keep foods in your home that help you reach your goals for a healthy body and mind.
